Don’t throw out your old computer!

Dell optiplex 755

I was in a meeting a couple of days ago when someone told me “My computer guy says that there’s no point in repairing my computer. Might just as well toss it and buy a new one.” WHAT? That’s outrageous!

There was a time when software technologies were becoming so big and bulky at such a pace that your current computer became obsolete almost as soon as you bought it. That “fact” was pretty much common knowledge and people still believe it today. But it’s no longer true and hasn’t been for several years. When it came to software bloat, Microsoft was in my opinion the biggest culprit of all. They kept making bigger, fatter operating systems that required more and more processing power and memory… until Vista. But Vista came under massive criticism for this (and for many other issues). Microsoft was forced to deliver performance fixes, and with Windows 7, they implicitly admitted that bigger is no longer better.

In other words, you don’t have to buy a new computer to handle newer technologies because the market has had enough of that. Windows 7 will run on virtually any machine today and it will run well.

That was just one example. The bottom line is, although you can go out and spend thousands of dollars on a computer with 8 processors today, for all intents and purposes your old single core machine can still probably do it all very well, at least for the average home and business user. All it may need is a tune-up and possibly a memory upgrade and it’ll run as good as new. in fact we at TPteQ make this promise: “Bring it to us and we will make it run BETTER than new. That’s our guarantee!” And at a fraction of the cost of that new computer.

Please don’t toss out that old machine. And please don’t forget about us. We need your business because there are two of us here full time now. Bring us that old computer that’s sitting languishing in the corner. Let’s revive it and get it back up and humming.

Can’t wait to hear from you!

Fixed Windows 7 “Bootmgr is compressed” error

Screenshot of the Recovery Console of Windows ...

Image via Wikipedia

Feeling pretty good right now. A customer was unable to get into his Windows 7 OS. Got the message: “Bootmgr is compressed”.

Dave always tells me, “Google is your friend!” So I went and Googled it. I wasn’t very hopeful because the solutions people suggest hardly ever work. This one did!

The solution follows:

1. Boot from a Windows 7 install CD, Select Repair, and choose Command Prompt.

2. Run the following coomands in the order specified:

a. “bootrec /FixMbr
b. “bootrec /fixboot”
c. “bootrec /rebuildbcd”

3. Exit and reboot.

Busy, busy, busy

Business Cycle
Image via Wikipedia

This past week or two has been nice and busy, just the way we like it. :-)

We are building a customer base so that the business cycle goes from “work, no work, work no work” to “lots of work, work, lots of work, work”.

As we build up a strong base of satisfied customers, they recommend us to their friends and loved ones, and when they themselves need more work down the line the first people they think of is TPteQ. It was harder when we were starting out because we were limited to new customers only.

In America, getting rich isn’t the main thing: it’s the ONLY thing! I don’t know if you can get rich doing what we do, but if I don’t, I will die trying. It took me over 30 years to realize that I really didn’t have to work for the man. Well, at least I figured it out before it was too late. LOL

IE8 Running Slow? Try This…

IE8 Running Slow? Try This:

Many people who install IE8 complain that it runs very slowly, sometimes completely bogging down their systems. This type of behavior usually signals a problem with system resources, but there may be a simple fix. Run this simple command from RUN under START, or from a Command Prompt:

regsvr32 actxprxy.dll

This re-registers the ActiveX Interface Marshaling Library, an obscure DLL that most people (even Microsoft experts) have never heard of. (Note that if you try this using Windows Vista, you must do this from an elevated Command Prompt window; type cmd in the Start menu Search box, right-click the Cmd.exe shortcut, and then choose Run As Administrator.)

I did this on all my computers, and the results were astonishing. IE8 is stable as well as performing faster. Best of all, it starts faster. You know that irritating “Connecting” message? It is virtually eliminated.

It’s great to be busy… but a challenge also

craigslist redo redo

Looks like we may finally get done at Plastamet. That was a much bigger job than we anticipated.

I’m glad we weren’t able to sell our spare desktops on craigslist. A current customer customer called yesterday needing one. It’s always a treat to have one available when a customer calls.

It can be difficult to administer everything sometimes. If we ever get big, we’re going to need someone to keep tabs on everything.

Open Office, an excellent alternative to Microsoft Office

Open Office, an excellent alternative to Microsoft Office

So long as you don’t use Microsoft Outlook (we do not recommend Outlook as there are many great alternatives that don’t get you locked into paying Microsoft forever), Open Office is free, legal and Open Source and can do just about anything Microsoft Office can do.

Click on the image below to download it now:

We have to make some simply configuration changes to make Open Office compatible with Microsoft Office. (You only have to do this one time!):

  1. Open any Open Office App.
  2. Click on “Tools” and select “Options” from the dropdown.
  3. On the next screen, click on the “+” next to “Load/Save”.
  4. Under “Load/Save” click on “General”.
  5. Then on the right at the bottom of the pane, select the three document types (text, spreadsheet and presentation) and choose “Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP”, “Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP”, and “Microsoft Powerpoint 97/2000/XP” respectively.
  6. Then, right above these, uncheck “Size optimization for ODF” and “Warn when not saving in ODF…”
  7. Finally, click on the OK button

That’s it! Done! Enjoy!

My favorite job

Media that has suffered a catastrophic electro...
Image via Wikipedia

The data recovery job turned out to be my favorite kind. The enclosure was bad, and all we had to do was pull it apart, attach an adapter, plug it in to a computer and we were off to the races.

It’s always a relief for us, and especially for the customer, when we can retrieve their data so readily and fully.

Was surprised to discover today that neither Best Buy nor Office Depot carry OEM copies of Windows 7, only upgrades from Vista. I guess their philosophy must be: “If you need to upgrade from XP, just get a new computer.” Amazing!

Latest at Plastamet, etc.

Laptop Windows 7 Octubre (2009)

Turns out I was spelling the company name wrong. It’s Plastamet as in Plastic and Metal.

Well Dave was determined to finish up today but the OS was just too badly corrupted, so we will be  picking up a copy of Windows 7 and installing it Monday. Makes it a bigger, more lucrative job. Customer is just happy that we were able to recover his data. He says he’s not usually that lucky.

We also received 3 laptops with heat issues. Dave think he may be able to fix those without sending them out. That’ll save time and money.

We also got an external hard drive for data recovery. Hope this is an easy one.

TPteQ arrives in Blogland

Image via Wikipedia

So here we are in Blogland, finally!

Had a busy day today. Dave was at Plastanet, a small business in Addison, finishing up a server repair job. I had some personal stuff to take care of this morning, then I picked up a laptop from, and delivered two to, our component guy in Chicago. He was finishing up when I arrived. Had to verify that everything worked, fixed the CMOS date and time, made sure wireless worked, and then off to Berkeley to deliver. Customer’s daughter was off to college at 5, and I got there with 2 hours to spare. Customer was delighted, and praised us for our quick service. One appreciates a kind word. :O) Got back to the office, and finished up work on a laptop that had experienced heat issues and whose OS seems to have got corrupted.

At Plastanet we discovered that Hiren’s is the greatest tool on the planet! We also discovered that a raw copy of data is very time consuming. We need to remember that next time we get a job like this. Plastanet got a great deal!

So far 2011 has been slow business-wise. Let’s hope things are turning around.
